Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for the full-time, exempt position of Associate Dean of Students. The Associate Dean of Students (Student Life) serves in a significant leadership role within the Division of Student Life and in general on campus as it pertains to the success and well-being of students. The Associate Dean of Students is integral to the University's student success/retention initiatives. The Associate Dean of Students has primary oversight for Student Conduct, Residence Life & Housing, Student Leadership & Involvement, Intramurals & Campus Recreation, Multicultural & First Generation Student Engagement, and the Counseling Center.  The Associate Dean of Students leads by example - exemplifying the Christian faith, as well as Christian discipleship and witness in his/her daily interactions. This position reports directly to the Dean of Students and is located in River Forest, IL.


  • Manages and supervises Student Life staff in the areas of Residence Life & Housing, Student Leadership & Involvement, Intramurals & Campus Recreation, Counseling Center, and Multicultural & First Generation Student Engagement
  • Develops strategic plans, goals, and recommendations for areas of oversight within the Division of Student Life in consultation with the Dean of Students
  • Provides leadership for planning, implementing, documenting, and evaluating Student Life programs
  • Administers the policies and regulations of the University as they pertain to students, including internal university judicial and disciplinary procedures
  • Coordinates informal and formal hearings in accordance with the University student disciplinary process
  • Serves as the lead administrator for Maxient (conduct software) for the University setting up new user accounts & helping to support/train new users, creating/maintaining incident reports and letters, etc.
  • Works with the Student Life staff, campus constituencies and university community leaders in developing and managing extracurricular programming and service opportunities assuring integration with the academic life of the institution and encouraging student personal growth and development
  • Supports student success and retention in various ways, such as: academic outreach, wellness checks, providing educational resources and support to students, faculty, and staff
  • Develops and monitors the budget for assigned departments
  • Periodic evening and weekend presence required; Some travel required

Skill Sets: 

  • Enthusiastic supporter of Lutheran higher education and the mission, vision, and core values of Concordia University Chicago
  • Substantial experience in college administration, student life, counseling, and/or college teaching
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and cases simultaneously set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate a vision of the role of residential education and related student services in the overall educational experience of students and the ability to advance this vision in a resource-constrained environment
  • Commitment to supporting the needs of students from underrepresented populations
  • Experience implementing programs and services geared towards meeting the needs of students from underrepresented backgrounds
  • A sophisticated understanding of how to gather, analyze, and use data to develop and assess programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to resolve complex problems
  • Ability to use independent judgment
  • Knowledge of standard software packages and programs (e.g., Microsoft Office)
  • First-hand experience developing training and outreach programs on sexual violence prevention preferred
  • Knowledge of student conduct/behavior management software preferred

Minimum Experience Required:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in higher education management, student life
  • Knowledge of student disciplinary systems in a university environment required
  • Knowledge of relevant laws in a higher education setting (e.g., Title IX, VAWA/Campus SaVE, FERPA, Clery) required
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work consultatively with faculty and administrators at all levels within the University required

Education Requirements:

  • Master's Degree required (preferably in Higher Education Administration or related field).

Compensation and Benefits:

Starting range is dependent upon individual qualifications and experience. Concordia health, disability and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time employees and their eligible dependents. Tuition benefits are also available for employees and their qualified dependents.
