Responsibilities/Duties: 

The Department of Communication at Concordia University seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Strategic Communication to begin in the 2018-2019 academic year. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in communication or related field; ABD candidates will be considered.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate level, develop a program of scholarly research and perform service.

In our department, the area of strategic communication addresses how organizations and institutions communicate with the public to achieve their goals.  We seek candidates whose research and professional expertise is at the intersection of either (1) social media and public relations or (2) social media and persuasive communication.    

The candidate will teach strategic communication courses that integrate content pertaining to (1) social media, (2) public relations and (3) persuasive communication.  Courses combine scholarship in these three areas with hands-on instruction on how to create public communication campaigns. Synthesizing practical instruction with critical studies, our department aims for majors to have a wide-range of paths after graduation as professionals, practitioners and scholars.  Our department places emphasis on encouraging students to become engaged, self-aware, and ethical citizens.

The new hire will provide leadership for area of Strategic Communication, including the design and teaching of new curriculum.  In addition to social media and public relation classes, the new faculty member, will teach other departmental courses which may include Communication Research and Theory, Organizational and Team Communication, Business Communication, Advanced Public Speaking, and Media Literacy. 

In conjunction with the other faculty in the department, the new faculty member will be required to advise majors, supervise senior projects, oversee internship placement, plus other duties as assigned depending upon interests and expertise of the candidate. After several years as a teaching-focused faculty member, the new hire would eventually take on the administrative role of chair which rotates among the four faculty in the department.

Skill Sets:  

Fully qualified applicants will have three areas of expertise: (1) scholarly knowledge of the research and theory in communication studies (2) professional experience, and (3) multi-media skills.

Minimum Experience Required: Preference is given to candidates with college teaching experience, commitment to teaching excellence, professional experience, and a doctoral degree. 

Education Requirements: Ph.D.
