Responsibilities/Duties:  The Director of Housing Operations reports to the Director of Residence Life and Housing as a senior staff member that focuses on the housing day-to-day logistics and operations within the department.  It is critical this position focuses on creating efficient operational practices that intentionally apply a focus on student learning, growth, and development.  He/she is directly responsible for the strategic planning, organization, and execution of housing operations including marketing/promotions of University residence halls, room assignments, billing, and front desk management in the residence halls.  This position is directly responsible for overseeing the occupancy management on campus, managing the Residence Life database software (StarRez), creating efficient management systems and directly supervising the room selection process for both new and returning students.  This position serves in a mentoring capacity and will provide direction to professional and undergraduate staff and is part of the department's overall strategic planning process.    

Examples of job tasks (not all inclusive) include:

  • Assist the Director of Residence Life and Housing in the overall operation, strategic planning, and direction of the department with primary focus on directing operational practices
  • Oversee all aspects of occupancy management including: creating/managing efficient room change procedures, maintaining accurate occupancy records/numbers, managing all aspects of room selection process and placement process and establishing healthy lines of communication between various constituencies including students, parents, staff, and other offices
  • Manage and inventory all room keys and collaborate with locksmith, Department of Public Safety (DPS), and professional staff in establishing an efficient key management system
  • Manage the implementation, organization and execution of StarRez residential data management program  including occupancy management and billing records
  • Manage and provide direct oversight over the residence hall front desk system and oversee the establishment of all policies, procedures, staffing, and ensure a best practice approach
  • Direct, train, and coordinate the opening and closing procedures for all residence halls
  • Mentor and provide indirect supervision of Residence Life live-in professional staff
  • Coordinate a welcome plan for new International students to campus upon their arrival and work together with International Student Services to assist in their transition to Concordia.
  • Oversee the condition of the residential facilities to maintain a safe, secure, and healthy living environment.
  • Design, implement, and sustain a Residence Life strategic marketing plan to promote on campus living, serve as webmaster for homepage, publicize Residence Life operational practices effectively, and collaborate with other offices to create a marketable identity for the department
  • Evaluate and assess University housing occupancy, retention, and projection trends.

Skill Sets: 

  • Strong work ethic and an ability to multi-task and work comfortably in a fast pace and highly dynamic student centered environment
  • Strong organizational skills demonstrating an ability to be detail oriented and to create systems that cater to the needs of students, multiple offices, and the public
  • Comfortable to work with housing and university database systems (StarRez & BANNER) and a fast ability and willingness to learn how to navigate those systems.
  • Practiced in using student development theory to create intentional systems to assist in the learning, growth, and development of our students
  • Self starter that has had progressive leadership in Residence Life and is comfortable playing a prominent leadership role on a professional team
  • Ability to maintain superior levels of integrity and best practices in higher education.


Minimum Experience Required:

  • 4-6 years of full time progressive leadership, responsibilities, and career development in Residence Life
  • Experience with StarRez software STRONGLY preferred
  • Experience working with operational practices in Residence Life preferred
  • Position requires technological savvy in using multiple computer programs (Microsoft Office suite and Excel heavily used) to generate reports and assessment data for multiple offices.


Education Requirements:

  • Master's degree in student development or related area required.
