Concordia University, Chicago, IL is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Literacy for the Reading graduate programs.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.  This position is directly responsible to the Department Chairperson. The instructor will teach master's and doctoral courses both face-to-face and on-line literacy courses as well as facilitate meaningful learning of the course competencies embedded within the curriculum.


  • Provides competency, standards-based education which aligns with the Concordia University conceptual framework, International Literacy Association, as well as supports the Concordia University style and system of learner-centered instructional delivery.
  • Draws upon and integrates prior experience as a reading specialist or literacy coach in their teaching and relates professional/life experience to learning by the introduction of real-world perspectives into courses, and the active awareness of professional trends, research, and opportunities.
  • Designs and delivers both on-line and face-to-face class instruction through the development of instructional plans to meet course competencies, the development of activities which support course objectives, and delivers the instruction as approved.
  • Considers the general and special needs of the students, assists them in meeting those needs, and when necessary, seeks additional help from other college services.
  • Cooperates with the Department Chairperson and Program Leaders, department members, and the appropriate administrators in the development of the curriculum, in the preparation and update of course syllabi, course outlines, and selection of textbooks and other curricular materials.
  • Works to continuously improve the curriculum, instructional delivery, and assessment of all program requirements in accordance with NCATE/CAEP and IBHE requirements.
  • Manages the learning environment through keeping accurate records, submitting attendance and grades and other reports on time, and enforcing school/college academic and attendance policies.

Skill Sets: 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to build successful relationships with various student populations.
  • Familiarity with online teaching tools or platforms used in fully online or hybrid/blended formats preferable

Minimum Experience Required:

  • Preferably 5 or more years of classroom experience teaching students in public or private schools as well as working as a reading specialist or reading coach at many different levels in diverse educational program settings.
  • Preferably a minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a post-secondary or college institution with experience teaching adult learners in a graduate environment in the classroom and/or online is favorable.

Education Requirements: Ph.D. or Ed. D degree in Literacy (Reading, Writing and Assessment) or curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in literacy.
