Reponsibilities/Duties:  Concordia University Chicago, a liberal arts-based Christian university founded in the Lutheran tradition, is seeking a competent, compassionate, and creative individual who can work in an academic advising capacity with undergraduate students. Academic advisors must master degree criteria for all undergraduate program major and minor requirements.   Advisors are aware of resources that can be utilized to improve college student academic performance, social engagement, and emotional and spiritual health and will refer them to appropriate services as needed. Advisors also develop strategies for students to be successful beyond the classroom and prepare them to become leaders in their field of study and to meet anticipated professional goals. Academic advisors communicate regularly with faculty advisors, department chairs, and college deans to ensure the work we do is consistent with the mission and vision of the University.  Advisors must develop a comprehensive understanding of university policies and enforce them with integrity. 

Advisors are assigned populations based on an alphabetical order, however, they are also expected to meet with students outside of their advising load on walk-in days.  In addition to one-one meetings, Advisors create, develop, and implement group advising programs to serve student needs and regularly lead public presentations for students, parents, faculty, and staff. Interdepartmental collaboration and cooperation is a necessity to ensure student needs are met and department goals are achieved.

Standard hours of operation are 8am 4:30pm Monday and Friday and 8am -6pm Tuesday through

Thursday, some evenings and weekends will be required.

  • Oriented toward detail and meticulous work habits including punctuality, organization, & notetaking
  • Affinity for problem-solving, investigating, record-keeping, and creative planning
  • Positive contributor to collaborative efforts
  • Aptitude for process oriented functions that requires technological support and innovation
  • Ability to work with individuals under stressful situations and maintain emotional management
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality of student records and office data
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and sense of humor
  • Computer literate with specific fluency with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, & Publisher. 
  • Previous experience with BANNER a plus.
  • Professionalism when interacting with all populations in-person, by phone, email, and other digital media
  • Knowledge of the University's mission, goals and purpose

 

Minimum Experience Required: 1 year of professional or internship experience working with college students in an advisory capacity

 

Education Requirements: Master's Degree in Higher Education, College Student Development, Student Leadership & Involvement, Psychology, Counseling, or Social Work, or related preferred.
